Biographical or Historical Note: The Friends Council on Education, founded by a group of volunteer Quaker educators in 1931, promotes the theory and practice of Quaker education, supports Friends schools (pre-kindergarten through 12th grade) in maintaining their values-based learning environments, and provides a professional development network for educational issues, philosophy and practice in Friends schools.

Scope and Content Note: This is a collection of records of the Friends Council on Education. Materials include: minutes and financial reports (1930-1979); reports to Yearly Meetings; grant proposals and correspondence; records of various educational programs and workshops, such as the Friends School Day and the Friends Teacher Training Program; copies of the Courier (a Friends Council publication); minutes of the Quaker Headmasters Association (1929-1968); articles and pamphlets on Quaker education; and materials related to a 1968 misappropriation of funds case. The collection also includes correspondence and reports of the Independent Urban Education Corporation and annual reports of the Association for Promoting College Education of Women (1903-1928).
