Biographical or Historical Note: Thomas Garrett Jr. (1789-1871) was an abolitionist and leader in the Underground Railroad movement before the American Civil War. In 1813, he married Margaret Mary Sharpless (1793-1828). After his first wife's death, he married Rachel Mendenhall (1792-1868). He had five children with his first wife, including Anna Garrett and Margaret Malin Garrett. Margaret M. Garrett married James Garrett McCollin in 1848. Their children included Anna Garrett McCollin, who married Benjamin Vail.

Scope and Content Note: This is a collection of correspondence of Thomas Garrett and his descendants. Letters discuss health and daily activities, such as outings and visits from family and friends. Correspondents include Thomas Garrett, Jr., James G. and Margaret McCollin, Benjamin and Anna G. M. Vail, and James Garrett Vail. Also included are genealogical materials about the Garrett family.
