Biographical or Historical Note: Leon Thomas Stern (1887-1980) studied adult and juvenile correctional institutions. He was Secretary of the Pennsylvania Committee on Penal Affairs and served as Chief Probation Officer of the Municipal Court of Philadelphia. He is the author of J. Bernard Walton, Quaker and Social Worker. Elizabeth Gertrude Stern (1890-1954) was a journalist and novelist. She wrote under the pen names Eleanor Morton and Leah Morton. She is the author of I Am a Woman and a Jew and The Women Behind Mahatma Gandhi.

Scope and Content Note: The collection includes papers of Leon and Elizabeth Stern. Leon Stern materials include: prison and correctional pamphlets; articles and reports; newspaper clippings and a scrapbook; and a typed manuscript of and correspondence about Stern's biography of J. Barnard Walton. Materials in the collection related to Elizabeth Stern include: correspondence about her newspaper column, novels, and radio talks; a photo album documenting her 1933 trip to Europe; school notebooks; newspaper clippings; and a typed annotated manuscript of The Women Behind Mahatma Gandhi.
